Recipe: My Family’s Famous Pasta Sauce

Spicy Italian sausage adds a nice kick to this sauce.

This sauce started with my grandmother, was tweaked when my mom inherited the recipe and then I made some additional tweaks. I definitely recommend getting good quality sausage from a local butcher. I serve this with Capello’s fettuccine which you can buy here.

Pasta Sauce

2 28oz cans ground tomatoes

1 28oz can tomato puree

1 lb ground beef

1 lb hot Italian sausage, cut into ½ inch slices

1 onion, rough chopped

1 tbsp fresh basil

1 tsp dried oregano

¼ tsp ground thyme

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp dried Italian seasoning

  1. In a large sauté pan over medium high heat, add 1 tbsp olive oil and the ground beef. Cook until there is no pink left. Discard excess fat and put meat in a large pot. In the same sauté pan, cook off the sausage. Once cooked, add this to the large pot as well.

  2. Add both cans of ground tomatoes and ½ the can of tomato puree to the pot with the meat.

  3. In a blender, combine the onion and the other half can of tomato puree and blend until smooth. Add to pot.

  4. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for 1 hour. That’s it!

*If you cannot find ground tomatoes, use 2 cans puree and 1 can crushed tomatoes.
